Business Social Compliance Initiative – BSCI Code of Conduct
BSCI offers a development-oriented system that helps BSCI Participants and their business partners to improve working conditions in their supply chains. The BSCI Code of Conduct is at the centre of the system. The Code is a set of principles and values that reflects the beliefs of BSCI Participants and the expectations they have towards their business partners.
The Code refers to important international conventions, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Children's Rights and Business Principles, UN Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights, OECD Guidelines, UN Global Compact and ILO Conventions and Recommendations relevant to improve the working conditions in the supply chain.
BSCI Participants and their business partners act diligently and seek early detection of risks and impacts with the support of relevant stakeholders through meaningful dialogue and engagement. BSCI manages active dialogue and cooperation with stakeholders in Europe and in supplying countries, such as governments, business associations, buyers, suppliers, trade unions and NGOs, in order to find sustainable solutions to often complex labour challenges.
BSCI provides capacity building activities, in Europe and in sourcing countries, to develop the skills and capabilities of both BSCI Participants and their business partners (particularly producers involved in the monitoring system) to integrate social compliance into their daily operations.
BSCI provides its participants with auditing methodologies and tools in order to assess a producer's performance against the BSCI Code of Conduct and to evaluate improvements. BSCI audits do not lead to a certificate, but they act in combination with the other BSCI components to strive for improvements.
