Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an international, non-profit, non-governmental organization which promotes sustainable forest management through independent third party certification. It is considered the certification system of choice for small forest owners.

Its 35 worldwide independent national forest certification systems represent more than 300 million ha of certified forests, making it the largest forest certification system in the world, covering about two-thirds of the globally certified forest area

PEFC National Governing Bodies are organizations representing forest owners in a specific country. By endorsing a national standard PEFC allows National Governing Bodies to issue licenses for the use of the PEFC trademark. PEFC allows for regional and group certification. Regional certification allows for several forests located in a certain geographical area to share a certificate, whereas group certification has no specific geographic limitations. PEFC is a third party certification system meaning that compliance with requirements is assessed by an independent third-party certification body.
